Settings
Every tab in Settings: mailbox management, SMS, theme blocks, Connect AI, post-purchase and billing.
The Settings page is where you configure everything about xUpsell — enable the theme blocks on your storefront, connect SMS and email, connect your own AI assistant, set your trigger delays, customize post-purchase offers, and manage your plan. Access it from the Settings link in the sidebar navigation.
Tip: You don’t need to configure every setting before you start using xUpsell. The most important first steps are choosing a plan (email and SMS won’t send until you do — the free plan counts) and connecting at least one messaging channel (email, SMS, or push). Everything else can be set up as you need it.
Note: The heading at the top of the page reads Preferences, even though the sidebar link says Settings. It’s the same page — and Preferences is also the name of one of the tabs on it.
Settings Tabs
The Settings page is organized into 7 tabs and displays full-width for easier configuration. Click any tab to switch to that section.
| # | Tab | What It’s For |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Theme management | Turn the xUpsell blocks on in your storefront theme |
| 2 | SMS & Communications | Connect your Twilio account for SMS/MMS/RCS |
| 3 | Mailbox management | Connect the email account xUpsell sends from |
| 4 | Connect AI | Connect your own AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, or any MCP client) |
| 5 | Preferences | Trigger delay settings |
| 6 | Post-purchase | Customize the offer page shown after checkout |
| 7 | Plans & billing | View your usage and change your subscription plan |
Deep links. You can link straight to a tab, which is handy for bookmarks:
| Link | Opens |
|---|---|
/settings?tab=plans-billing | Plans & billing |
/settings?tab=post-purchase | Post-purchase |
/settings?tab=ai-connections | Connect AI |
/settings?tab=channels-settings | Mailbox management |
/settings?tab=Twilio-auth | SMS & Communications |
Good to know: After the tab opens, xUpsell tidies the address back to
/settings, so refreshing the page returns you to the first tab. Every “Upgrade” and “View Plans” button in the app uses the Plans & billing link above.
Theme Management
Manage your storefront elements — push notification prompts, discount popups, and custom event subscriptions.
| Setting | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Enable push notifications | Enable/disable the browser notification permission prompt on your store |
| Lead magnet | Enable/disable discount popup forms for collecting emails |
| Enable custom events subscription | Enable/disable custom event subscription forms |
Each block shows a badge telling you whether it’s currently enabled. Clicking Enable opens the Shopify theme editor in a new browser tab, pre-navigated to the right app embed — this is the fastest way to switch a block on. Clicking Disable opens the theme editor’s app-embed section so you can turn it off there.
Note: Because the change is made in the theme editor, the badge here only updates after Shopify reports the block’s new status. Save in the theme editor, then come back and reload the page.
For the full setup guide: See [Theme Extension & Store Blocks →] (Page 13)
SMS & Communications
This is where you connect your own Twilio account so xUpsell can send SMS, MMS, and RCS messages.
At the top, a Twilio setup progress bar tracks two steps:
- Connect Twilio account
- Buy and configure phone number
| Setting | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Account SID | Your Twilio account identifier — entered in the Enter Twilio Credentials window |
| Auth Token | Your Twilio security key. It’s checked by xUpsell’s server and never exposed back to the browser |
| Connection status | The Twilio card shows Account connected with your Account SID when you’re set up |
| View Usage Statistics | Opens your Twilio usage (messages, phone numbers, and more) inside xUpsell |
| Active Phone Numbers | Lists the numbers on your Twilio account, with a Buy Number button and the option to remove numbers |
| RCS Messaging | Paste a Twilio Messaging Service SID (starts with MG, 34 characters) to enable branded RCS. xUpsell checks with Twilio that the service has an RCS Sender, and warns you if it has no phone number for SMS fallback. Includes a Send test option and a step-by-step “How to set up RCS” guide |
Important: Disconnecting Twilio does not release your phone numbers — Twilio keeps billing you for them. Release your numbers in Twilio first if you want the charges to stop. xUpsell warns you about this before you disconnect.
Test messages count. A test RCS/SMS you send from this tab goes out through the same sending path as a real message, so it counts as one send against your plan.
You pay Twilio directly for SMS/MMS/RCS traffic and for your phone numbers, at Twilio’s rates. That’s separate from your xUpsell plan.
For step-by-step setup instructions: See [Setting Up SMS & Push Notifications →] (Page 4)
Where to find your Twilio credentials: Log in to your Twilio Console. Your Account SID and Auth Token are displayed right on the dashboard.
Mailbox Management
This is where you connect your email sending service. Without an email connection, xUpsell can’t send emails on your behalf.
An Email setup progress bar at the top shows whether you’ve connected a provider yet.
Providers at a glance:
| Provider | Status | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| SendGrid | Available now | All stores — reliable, scalable email delivery |
| Outlook | Available now | Sending from your own Microsoft 365 or Outlook.com mailbox |
| Gmail | Limited — awaiting Google review | Sending from your own Gmail or Google Workspace mailbox |
All three cards have a working Connect account button. Gmail is pending Google’s verification review, so only email addresses registered with Google in advance can complete the sign-in for now — anyone else is stopped by Google with “Access blocked.” See [Connecting Email →] (Page 3).
| Setting | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Connect account | Opens the Connect SendGrid account window, where you paste your SendGrid API key |
| Connection status | Each card shows how many accounts you’ve connected, e.g. “1/2 Accounts connected” |
| Verified senders | Your SendGrid sender identities are listed with a Verified / Unverified badge |
| Deliverability checklist | Shows what’s still missing (domain authentication, link branding, DMARC, unsubscribe setup) with a completion score and setup guides |
| Disconnect | Removes a connected account. For SendGrid, xUpsell asks you to confirm first and warns that email workflows using that account stop and pending or scheduled emails won’t be sent. Gmail and Outlook disconnect on the first click, with no confirmation step — so be sure before you click |
xUpsell validates your key with SendGrid before saving it. If the key is wrong you’ll see “Invalid API key”; if your SendGrid account has no sender identity yet you’ll see “No senders available. Please create a sender identity in SendGrid.”
Deliverability matters. If the checklist isn’t finished, xUpsell shows a warning: your emails will still send, but they’re more likely to land in spam.
How many accounts can I connect? The number of email accounts depends on your xUpsell plan:
| Plan | Gmail accounts | Outlook accounts | SendGrid accounts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Basic | 2 | 2 | 2 |
| Pro | 3 | 3 | 3 |
| Premium | Unlimited | Unlimited | Unlimited |
When you reach the limit, the connect button changes to Upgrade to connect more and a warning banner appears at the top of the tab. If you downgrade while over the limit, a red banner asks you to disconnect the extra accounts or upgrade again.
Note: All three quotas above are live — each provider has its own separate account limit per plan.
Any provider-side sending caps are your provider’s, not xUpsell’s. SendGrid’s own plan decides how much volume you can push through it; xUpsell only enforces the account counts and send limits from your xUpsell plan.
For step-by-step setup instructions: See [Connecting Your Email →] (Page 3)
Connect AI
xUpsell doesn’t have an AI assistant of its own. Instead, you connect the AI you already use — Claude, ChatGPT, or any other client that supports MCP connectors — and it works on your store through xUpsell.
| Setting | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Your connection URL | A read-only address unique to your store, with a Copy button. Paste it into your AI client as an MCP server |
| How to connect | The four steps below, shown right in the tab |
| Connected AI clients | Every connected client, with a green Connected badge, the date it was connected, and a Disconnect button |
How to connect:
- In your AI client, open its Connectors / MCP servers settings.
- Add a new connection and paste the URL from this tab.
- Your browser opens your Shopify admin — click Allow to approve.
- The client is connected and can run xUpsell’s tools for your store.
The exact wording differs by client (Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, MCP Inspector), but the URL is the same for all of them.
The connection URL isn’t a password. On its own it can’t read or change anything — nothing happens until you approve the connection inside your own Shopify admin.
Everything your AI creates is a draft. Workflows, campaigns and post-purchase offers arrive in xUpsell switched off, for you to review. Only publishing makes something real.
No extra charge, and no limits here. Connect AI works on every plan, there’s no cap on how many AI clients you connect, and xUpsell doesn’t charge for AI usage — you pay your own AI provider at their rates.
Disconnecting: click Disconnect next to a client. Its access stops immediately and it’s removed completely, so reconnecting means going through the approval screen again. Nothing it built is deleted.

Preferences
This tab holds Trigger Delay Settings — a waiting time, in hours, for each of the three behaviour-based triggers that wait before they start a workflow.
| Setting | Field | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Abandoned cart | Hours to wait after a cart is abandoned | 2 hours |
| Abandoned checkout | Hours to wait after a checkout is abandoned | 1 hour |
| Abandoned product page | Hours to wait after a customer leaves a product page | 8 hours |
How to configure:
- Go to Settings → Preferences
- Find the trigger you want to adjust
- Enter the delay in hours (minimum: 1 hour)
- Click Save Preferences — you’ll see “Preferences saved successfully!”
These delays are live. The number you save here is the wait xUpsell actually uses before it starts the workflow. Until 10 September 2026 the app ignored this tab and used built-in times instead (abandoned cart 24 hours, abandoned checkout 1 hour, abandoned product page 1 hour) — that’s fixed, so if you saved a value earlier and wondered why nothing changed, it applies now. Your saved values took effect with no action needed on your part.
Order confirmations don’t wait. The Order created trigger starts its workflow the moment the order is placed, so there’s no delay to set for it and it isn’t listed on this tab. If you want an order-created message to go out later, add a Delay step at the start of that workflow.
Tip: Need finer control than one wait per trigger? Build it into the workflow itself with Delay steps, where you can see exactly how long each step waits.
Post-purchase
Post-purchase offers are the deals shown to customers right after they complete checkout, before the thank-you page.
| Setting | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Post-purchase offers | The pencil (edit) button opens the post-purchase offer editor |
The editor is a drag-and-drop builder for the offer page itself — you add, reorder and configure the blocks shoppers see (heading, banner, product card, and so on), with a live desktop/mobile preview, then click Save.
Scope note: Which products are offered, at what discount, and what happens when a shopper accepts or declines is set up in a post-purchase workflow — the Offer step is available in the workflow editor when the workflow’s trigger is Post-purchase. It is not available in regular workflows. This tab controls how the offer page looks.
Plan availability: Post-purchase offers require Basic ($99/mo), Pro ($199/mo), or Premium ($299/mo). On the free plan this tab shows an “Upgrade to unlock Post-Purchase Upsells” banner with a View Plans button, and shoppers see no offers even if you’ve published some.
For the full guide: See [Post-Purchase Offers →] (Page 12)
Plans & billing
View your usage, see your current plan, and switch plans at any time from Settings → Plans & billing.
| Setting | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Sends this period | A live usage card showing sends used vs. your limit (or Unlimited), with a progress bar |
| Plan cards | Four cards — free, Basic, Pro, Premium — each with its price per month and what it includes |
| Current plan | Your active plan’s button is labelled Current plan and is disabled |
| Change plan | Other cards show Upgrade or Downgrade (or Select plan if you haven’t chosen one yet) |
Plans at a glance:
| Plan | Price | Sends (SMS + Email) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0/mo | 100 |
| Basic | $99/mo | 500 (hard limit — sending pauses until your next billing period) |
| Pro | $199/mo | Unlimited |
| Premium | $299/mo | Unlimited |
Good to know: Push notifications are unlimited on every plan — they never count toward your send total.
Choosing a paid plan takes you out of the Shopify admin frame to Shopify’s own approval screen, where you confirm the charge. Choosing the free plan happens inside the app with no checkout.
After you approve a charge, Shopify brings you straight back to Settings → Plans & billing and a short message confirms which plan you’re on. Your new plan is also marked Current plan on the plan cards.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to configure everything before I can use xUpsell?
No. You do need to choose a plan — email and SMS are blocked until you pick one (the free plan counts) — and connect at least one messaging channel: email, SMS, or push notifications. You can start with just one channel and add the others later.
Do I need an AI API key to use Connect AI?
No. There’s no API key to paste into xUpsell and no AI provider to choose in the app. You connect your own AI client (Claude, ChatGPT, or any MCP-compatible client) using the connection URL in Settings → Connect AI, and approve it in your Shopify admin.
How much does AI usage cost?
xUpsell doesn’t charge for AI usage and doesn’t meter your AI messages. Because you use your own AI client, you pay your AI provider directly at their rates. There is no markup from xUpsell, and Connect AI is available on every plan.
Where do I find my Twilio credentials?
Log in to your Twilio Console. Your Account SID and Auth Token are displayed right on the dashboard page. Copy them into Settings → SMS & Communications.
Can I connect more than one email account?
Yes — up to your plan’s limit (1 on Free, 2 on Basic, 3 on Pro, unlimited on Premium), and each provider has its own separate limit. When several accounts are connected, xUpsell sends through your connected mailboxes.
I changed a setting but it doesn’t seem to take effect?
Try refreshing the page. Theme blocks are switched on in the Shopify theme editor, so save there first and then reload the tab. If a connection is involved, check its status indicator (green = connected). If everything looks correct and the problem continues, reach out through the in-app Help widget — the round ? button in the bottom-right corner of every page.
