Welcome to xUpsell

What xUpsell does, how the pieces fit together, and where to start. One app for email, SMS, push and post-purchase offers.

xUpsell is an all-in-one marketing automation app built for Shopify. Instead of installing separate apps for email, SMS, and upsells, xUpsell brings everything together in one place.

Whether you’re just starting your first online store or running an established brand, xUpsell helps you send the right message to the right customer at the right time — automatically.

What Makes xUpsell Different?

Connect the AI You Already Use

xUpsell doesn’t have its own chatbot. Instead, you connect the AI assistant you already use — Claude, ChatGPT, or any other MCP-compatible client — and it works inside xUpsell on your behalf. Your AI does the thinking; xUpsell gives it a fixed, safe set of actions it is allowed to take on your store.

Once connected, you can ask your own assistant things like:

“Build me an abandoned cart recovery workflow with 3 emails over 3 days, with a 10% discount in the last email”

…and it will build the whole automation in xUpsell for you — trigger, timing, messages and conditions included.

How to set it up: go to Settings → Connect AI, copy your store’s connection URL, paste it into your AI client’s Connectors / MCP servers settings, and click Allow on the approval screen that opens in your Shopify admin.

Two things worth knowing:

  • Everything your AI builds is a draft. Drafts send nothing and show nothing to shoppers until you publish them, so you always review first.
  • You pay your own AI provider directly at their rates. xUpsell adds no markup and charges nothing extra for this — Connect AI works on every plan, including free.

Email + SMS + Push Notifications — All in One

No need for separate apps. xUpsell lets you:

  • Send emails to your customers
  • Send text messages (SMS) to their phones
  • Send push notifications to their browsers
  • Mix all channels in a single automation (e.g., email first, then a text message if they didn’t open it)

Everything is managed from one dashboard, with one subscriber list.

Core Features on Every Plan — Premium Features When You’re Ready

Every plan — even the free one — gives you the core platform: workflows, campaigns, subscribers, per-workflow and per-campaign analytics, Connect AI, and all three messaging channels (email, SMS, push). Push notifications are unlimited on every plan and never count toward your send limit.

Two features need a paid plan:

  • Post-purchase upsells — Basic ($99/mo), Pro ($199/mo) and Premium ($299/mo)
  • Templates — Basic ($99/mo), Pro ($199/mo) and Premium ($299/mo)

The free plan includes 100 email + SMS sends to try things out. Basic includes 500 per billing period, and Pro and Premium include unlimited sends. There is no free trial on any plan — the free plan itself is how you try xUpsell.

Built Into Your Shopify Store

xUpsell works seamlessly with your Shopify store:

  • Tracks customer behavior automatically — knows when someone views a product, adds to cart, or starts checkout
  • Syncs your customers — your Shopify customers become your subscribers automatically
  • Adds blocks to your store — a push-notification opt-in, a lead-magnet discount popup, and an event-subscription block, all switched on from Settings → Theme management
  • Post-purchase offers — show upsell offers right after checkout to increase order value
  • Works with Shopify Flow — a workflow can be started from a step inside Shopify Flow

What You’ll Find in the App

When you open xUpsell, here’s what each page does:

PageWhat It’s For
HomeYour starting point — the Setup Guide plus alerts about your plan and remaining sends
WorkflowsBuild automated sequences that run on their own (e.g., abandoned cart emails)
CampaignsSend one-time, scheduled or recurring messages to your customers
TemplatesReady-made automations you can use with one click (paid plans)
SubscribersSee and manage all your contacts
FilesUpload files (images, PDFs, and other supported types) to use in your emails
SettingsSet up your email, SMS, store theme blocks, Connect AI, post-purchase offers, plan & billing, and more

Those seven items are the whole sidebar.

Note: Analytics are available within each workflow and campaign overview page, not as a separate sidebar item. Your plan and billing are managed under Settings → Plans & billing (a tab in Settings), not a separate sidebar item. Post-purchase offers are also a tab in Settings.

What Can xUpsell Do?

Workflows (Automated Sequences)

Workflows run automatically when something happens in your store. For example: a customer abandons their cart → xUpsell waits 1 hour → sends a reminder email → waits 1 day → sends a follow-up with a discount.

You can create workflows in three ways:

  1. Build it yourself — Drag and drop steps on a visual canvas
  2. Use a template — Pick a ready-made workflow and customize it (paid plans)
  3. Ask your connected AI — Describe what you want and it builds a draft workflow for you to review and publish

What you can add to a workflow:

These are the blocks you drag onto the canvas, using the names you’ll see in the editor’s sidebar:

StepWhat It Does
EmailSend an email to the customer
CardSend a text message (SMS/MMS) to their phone
NotificationSend a push notification to their browser
DelayPause for a set amount of time before the next step
ConditionCheck something before continuing (e.g., “did they purchase?”)
DiscountAutomatically create and send a Shopify discount code
AB SplitSend part of your audience down one path and the rest down another
Update ProductChange a product in your Shopify catalog as part of the flow
OfferPresent a special deal after purchase (added as an Offer node in the workflow editor on a Post-purchase trigger — this is where the offer itself is configured)

When do workflows start? (Triggers)

You choose what starts a workflow. The options are:

  • Abandoned cart, Abandoned checkout and Abandoned product page
  • New customer
  • Subscribed to receive email marketing, push notifications, or SMS/MMS marketing
  • Order created
  • Post-purchase (for upsell offers)
  • View product
  • Low stock and Out of stock
  • Product discount and Discount subscription
  • Shopify flow — start the workflow from a step inside Shopify Flow

Campaigns (One-Time Messages)

Unlike workflows that run automatically, campaigns are messages you decide to send:

TypeHow It Works
Send NowSend immediately to your chosen audience — the button reads Run now
SchedulePick a date and time — it sends automatically
RecurringA scheduled campaign with a repeat rule (daily, weekly, monthly or yearly, every n periods)

You can send a campaign to all subscribers or to one or more segments you’ve built from the Subscribers page.

Templates

Don’t want to start from scratch? Browse our library of ready-made workflows. Find one that fits your goal, click Use template, and it becomes a draft workflow you can customize before turning it on. The Templates page has two tabs: xUpsell Templates (our library) and My Templates (workflows you’ve saved as templates yourself).

Plan note: The xUpsell template library is a paid feature — on the free plan those cards are disabled, and Basic and above unlock them. Saving your own workflows as templates works on every plan, including Free.

Subscribers

Your Shopify customers are automatically added as subscribers. From the Subscribers page you can:

  • See how many subscribers you have on each channel — push notifications, email and SMS/MMS
  • Browse the full list (visitor ID, name, email, phone, browser, city and sign-up date)
  • Search by email, name, or visitor ID
  • Filter by subscription channel (email, SMS/MMS, push)
  • Select subscribers and Create segment — a new segment, or add them to an existing one
  • Open a subscriber’s profile to see their Timeline (their journey through your store)
  • Send a campaign to one subscriber, copy their email, export their data, or delete them

Analytics

Open any workflow or campaign to see how it’s performing. There’s no separate Analytics page in the sidebar — the numbers live on each workflow’s overview page:

  • Executed — How many times the workflow ran
  • Impressions — How many people saw your messages
  • Clicks — Link clicks in your emails and messages
  • Conversions — The number of conversions your automations drove (a count, not a revenue figure)

On a Post-purchase workflow the middle two cards change to Offers declined and Offers accepted, since that’s what matters for an upsell.

Connect AI

Found under Settings → Connect AI. This is where you connect your own AI assistant to your store.

  • Copy Your connection URL and add it as an MCP server in your AI client
  • Approve the connection on the screen that opens in your Shopify admin
  • Your AI can then read your workflows, campaigns, products and store settings, and build workflows, campaigns and post-purchase offers for you
  • Everything it creates is a draft — nothing sends or shows to shoppers until you publish it
  • Connected assistants are listed here, and you can Disconnect any of them instantly

Your AI cannot read your subscribers, your customers or your orders — that access is never granted, so no AI client can see who’s on your list or what anyone bought.

Files

Upload the files you want to use in your emails — images, video, audio, PDFs, Office documents, and plain text or CSV files. Drag and drop to upload, search and sort your library, and insert files directly into your email designs. Each file can be up to 5 MB.

Post-Purchase Offers

After a customer completes their purchase (but before the thank you page), you can show them a special offer. They can add another product to their order with just one click — no need to enter payment again. This is a great way to increase your average order value.

You design the offer page under Settings → Post-purchase. Shopify shows a shopper at most 2 offers in a row (3 in total if you branch them), and post-purchase upsells require a Basic plan or higher.

How It All Works Together

Here’s the simple flow:

1. Install xUpsell → Get the app from the Shopify App Store

2. Choose a plan → Sending is switched off until you pick one, and the free plan counts

3. Connect your email → Add a SendGrid, Outlook or Gmail account under Settings → Mailbox management

4. Your customers sync automatically → Shopify customers become xUpsell subscribers

5. Customer behavior is tracked → xUpsell sees when customers view products, add to cart, or checkout

6. Automations run on their own → Your workflows send the right message at the right time

7. You see the results → Open a workflow or campaign to see what’s working and optimize

Supported Email & SMS Services

Email

Email providers live under Settings → Mailbox management:

  • SendGrid — available now. Connect it with a SendGrid API key. The deliverability checklist on the card then shows you what’s still missing (domain authentication, link branding, unsubscribe tracking, DMARC) so your emails don’t land in spam.
  • Outlook — send from your own Microsoft 365 or Outlook.com mailbox.
  • Gmail — send from your own Gmail or Google Workspace mailbox. Awaiting Google’s verification review, so for now only addresses registered with Google in advance can complete the sign-in.

Text Messages (SMS)

To send text messages, connect your own Twilio account under Settings → SMS & Communications, then buy and configure a phone number there. Twilio is a popular messaging service — if you don’t have an account yet, you can create one at twilio.com. You’re billed by Twilio directly for messages and phone numbers.

You can also switch on RCS (branded, richer messaging) by pasting a Twilio Messaging Service SID. If a shopper’s phone doesn’t support RCS, xUpsell falls back to plain SMS automatically.

Push Notifications

To collect web push subscribers, go to Settings → Theme management and enable Enable push notifications — the button opens your Shopify theme editor in a new tab so you can switch the xUpsell block on and save. The same tab also lets you switch on the Lead magnet discount popup and Enable custom events subscription (a “Notify me about this product” block for your product pages, which feeds the Out of stock, Low stock and Product discount triggers).

Once a block is in place, visitors can opt in and you can send them push notifications. Push notifications are unlimited on every plan and never count toward your email + SMS send limit.
