Plans & Billing
The four plans, what each includes, how sends are counted, and how to change plan.
xUpsell offers four plans — Free, Basic, Pro, and Premium. Every plan gives you access to the core platform. The main differences are your usage limits and which premium features are unlocked.
You’ll find your plan in the app under Settings → Plans & billing.
How Billing Works
xUpsell bills through Shopify on a simple 30-day cycle:
- You choose a plan — Free, Basic, Pro, or Premium. Email and SMS sending stays switched off until you pick one (the Free plan counts).
- You use the app — send emails and SMS, build workflows and campaigns
- Usage is tracked — every email and SMS you send counts toward your plan’s send limit. Push notifications never do.
- Limits reset each cycle — on a paid plan, your send counter starts fresh every 30 days
- Upgrade anytime — an upgrade takes effect as soon as you approve the charge in Shopify
Billing goes through Shopify. Your xUpsell plan appears on your regular Shopify invoice. Separately, you pay Twilio directly for SMS at their rates, your email provider if it has its own charges, and — if you connect your own AI assistant — your AI provider directly.
Plans at a Glance
| Free | Basic | Pro | Premium | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $0/mo | $99/mo | $199/mo | $299/mo |
| Sends (SMS + Email) | 100 | 500 | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Push Notifications | Unlimited | Unlimited | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Gmail Accounts | 1 | 2 | 3 | Unlimited |
| Outlook Accounts | 1 | 2 | 3 | Unlimited |
| SendGrid Accounts | 1 | 2 | 3 | Unlimited |
| Templates Feature | ✗ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Post-Purchase Upsell | ✗ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
Your plan price is all you pay xUpsell. There are no per-send fees on any plan. When you use up the sends your plan includes, email and SMS sending simply pauses — upgrade to carry on straight away, or wait for your sends to refresh. You can never run up a surprise bill.
Paid plans are billed from the moment you approve them. The Free plan stays free with no time limit, so you can set everything up before you pay for anything.
On email providers: SendGrid, Outlook and Gmail can all be connected in Settings → Mailbox management, and each has its own account limit per plan. Gmail is awaiting Google’s verification review, so only addresses registered with Google in advance can sign in for now.
What Every Plan Includes
No matter which plan you’re on — even Free — you get full access to:
Marketing Channels
- Email — Visual email editor for building your message
- SMS / MMS — Text messages with images (requires your own Twilio account)
- Push Notifications — Browser-based notifications (unlimited on all plans, and always free)
Automation
- Workflows — Build multi-step automations with email, SMS, push, wait, conditions, discount codes, update product, and Shopify Flow trigger
- Post-purchase offers — Add a Post-purchase trigger in the workflow editor and configure the Offer step there (the Post-purchase editor under Settings → Post-purchase is for designing the offer widget’s layout). Available on Basic, Pro, and Premium.
- All triggers — Abandoned cart, abandoned checkout, abandoned product page, new customer, email/SMS/push opt-in, order created, post-purchase, view product, low stock, out of stock, product discount, and more
- Conditional logic — Branch workflows based on customer behavior
Campaigns
- Immediate campaigns — Send right now
- Scheduled campaigns — Pick a date and time
- Recurring campaigns — Repeat daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly
Connect AI
- Bring your own AI assistant — Connect the AI you already use (Claude, ChatGPT, or any MCP-compatible client) from Settings → Connect AI, approve it inside your Shopify admin, and it can build workflows, campaigns, and post-purchase offers for you
- Everything it builds is a draft — nothing sends and no shopper sees anything until you publish it yourself
- Disconnect anytime — from the same tab; access stops immediately
Connect AI is on every plan and costs nothing extra. There is no limit on how many AI assistants you connect, and xUpsell doesn’t meter, mark up, or resell AI usage — you pay your own AI provider at their rates. xUpsell has no AI assistant of its own.
Shopify Integrations
- Web Pixel — Automatic customer behavior tracking
- Theme Extension — Subscribe forms, popups, and store blocks
- Shopify Flow — Connect xUpsell to Shopify Flow actions
Everything Else
- Analytics — Per-workflow and per-campaign metrics (executions, impressions, clicks, conversions)
- Subscriber Management — View contacts, search, see each subscriber’s timeline, and target your Shopify customer segments in campaigns
- Event Tracking — Customer actions tracked automatically
- File Uploads — Images and media for your emails and campaigns (up to 5 MB per file)
Understanding Your Limits
Sends (SMS + Email)
Your plan includes a limit for combined email + SMS sends per billing period. Emails and text messages share the same pool.
| Plan | Sends (SMS + Email) |
|---|---|
| Free | 100 |
| Basic | 500 |
| Pro | Unlimited |
| Premium | Unlimited |
Example on the Basic plan (500 sends per cycle):
- Sending 400 emails and 100 SMS = 500 sends (limit reached)
- Sending 500 emails and 0 SMS = 500 sends (limit reached)
- Sending 250 emails and 150 SMS = 400 sends (100 remaining)
What counts as a send:
- Each email delivered to one recipient = 1 send
- Each SMS/MMS delivered to one recipient = 1 send
- A test SMS you send from Settings → SMS & Communications also counts
What doesn’t count:
- Push notifications — always unlimited, on every plan
- Sends that failed (a send is only counted once your provider accepts it)
- Wait, condition, discount and other non-messaging workflow steps
- Anything still saved as a draft — drafts don’t send
Important: This is your xUpsell plan limit. Your email or SMS provider may also have limits or charges of its own (a SendGrid plan’s daily cap, for example). Those apply independently of your xUpsell send limit.
What Happens at Your Send Limit
No plan charges for extra sends. When you’ve used the sends your plan includes — 100 on Free, 500 on Basic — email and SMS sending pauses until your counter resets, and you are never billed beyond your plan’s monthly price.
- Push notifications keep working, on every plan, and never count toward the limit
- Pro and Premium have unlimited sends, so this never applies
- To carry on sending straight away, upgrade in Settings → Plans & billing — the new allowance applies as soon as you approve the charge
Your only xUpsell cost is your plan’s monthly price. There is no per-send fee and no way to run up a surprise bill.
Push Notifications
Push notifications are unlimited on all plans and are always free. They never count toward your send limit, and they keep working even when your email and SMS sending is paused.
Email Accounts
Each plan limits how many email provider accounts you can connect:
| Free | Basic | Pro | Premium | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gmail | 1 | 2 | 3 | Unlimited |
| Outlook | 1 | 2 | 3 | Unlimited |
| SendGrid | 1 | 2 | 3 | Unlimited |
Most merchants only need one email account connected. If you need multiple sender addresses, higher plans let you connect more of each provider. All three — SendGrid, Outlook and Gmail — can be connected today, with Gmail limited to pre-registered addresses until Google’s review completes.
When you’re at your limit, Settings → Mailbox management shows a warning banner and the connect button changes to Upgrade to connect more. If you move to a lower plan while you have more accounts connected than the new plan allows, you’ll see a red banner telling you how many are over the limit.
Premium Features
Some features are plan-gated (not available on every plan):
Templates Feature
Access the pre-built xUpsell template library. Available on Basic ($99/mo), Pro ($199/mo), and Premium ($299/mo). On the Free plan the xUpsell template cards are disabled — but saving your own workflows as templates is free on every plan, including Free. Your own templates are your work, so they’re never locked away.
Post-Purchase Upsell
Show upsell offers to customers immediately after they complete checkout. Available on Basic ($99/mo), Pro ($199/mo), and Premium ($299/mo). On the Free plan, post-purchase offers you’ve already built simply stop being shown to shoppers.
What Happens When You Hit a Limit
No Plan Selected
Right after installing, no plan is selected yet — and email and SMS sending is blocked until you pick one:
- A yellow “No plan selected” banner appears on your Home page
- Click “Select a Plan” — it takes you to Settings → Plans & billing
- Choosing Free is enough to switch sending on
Send Limit Reached
When you’ve used all the sends in your plan:
- Sending pauses — No more emails or SMS will be sent
- A red banner appears on your Home page — “Send limit reached”
- Workflows are affected — Email and SMS steps in active workflows are skipped and marked failed
- Push notifications keep working — They’re unlimited and unaffected
What to do:
- Upgrade your plan for a higher limit (takes effect as soon as you approve the charge)
- Wait for your next billing cycle, when a fresh send counter starts
Once a campaign send has been queued, it can’t be recalled — not by you and not by support. Check your remaining sends before publishing a large campaign.
Running Low on Sends
When you’ve used 70% or more of your sends:
- A yellow warning banner appears on your Home page
- You see your usage — e.g., “You’ve used 425 of 500 sends (85%)”
- Everything still works — Sending continues normally
- Consider upgrading before you run out
The workflow editor shows the same warning, and also warns you when a workflow contains more send steps than you have sends left.

Managing Your Plan
Viewing Your Current Plan
- Go to Settings → Plans & billing
- You’ll see all four plans, with your current one marked Current plan
- Above the plan cards, the usage card shows your sends for this period
Changing Your Plan
- Go to Settings → Plans & billing
- Click Upgrade, Downgrade, or Select plan on the plan you want
- For a paid plan, xUpsell hands you to Shopify’s approval screen, which shows the price per 30 days. Approve it there.
When the change takes effect:
- Upgrading — immediately. Your new limits are live as soon as Shopify confirms the charge.
- Moving to a lower paid plan (for example Pro → Basic) — at your next billing date. You approve it now, but your current price and limits stay until the cycle ends.
- Switching to Free — immediately. Your paid subscription is cancelled straight away and Free limits apply at once, so switch at the end of a cycle if you want to use what you’ve already paid for.
After you approve a charge, Shopify brings you straight back to Settings → Plans & billing and a short message confirms which plan you are on. Your new plan is also marked Current plan on the plan cards.
What happens to your data? Nothing is deleted. All your workflows, campaigns, subscribers, and analytics are preserved. If a lower plan doesn’t include a premium feature you were using (like Templates or Post-Purchase Upsell), that feature becomes unavailable until you move back to a plan that includes it.
Cancelling
There’s no separate cancel button — moving to the Free plan is how you cancel:
- Go to Settings → Plans & billing
- Click Downgrade on the Free plan
- Your paid subscription is cancelled immediately and Free limits apply right away
- Your data stays intact — workflows, campaigns, subscribers, and analytics are all preserved
Your Twilio account and phone numbers are separate from your xUpsell plan and are not affected. Twilio keeps billing you for any numbers you hold until you release them in Twilio itself.
Billing Cycle & Resets
How the Billing Cycle Works
- Your billing cycle starts when you approve a paid plan
- It runs for 30 days, then renews through Shopify
- When a new cycle starts:
- A fresh send counter begins at 0
- You’re charged for the next cycle through Shopify
Account and mailbox counts are not per-cycle — they reflect what you currently have connected, so they don’t reset.
On the Free plan, the 100 sends refresh at the start of each calendar month. Paid plans refresh with your own 30-day billing cycle instead.
Checking Your Usage
Sends (SMS + Email):
- Your Home page warns you at 70% used, and again when you’ve run out
- Settings → Plans & billing shows a live “Sends this period” card with a used/limit badge and a progress bar (it refreshes automatically every 30 seconds)
Free-plan note: the “Sends this period” card doesn’t track the Free allowance — it will keep reading 0 / 100. Trust the Home page banners instead, or upgrade to see accurate usage numbers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is xUpsell really free?
Yes. The Free plan gives you the core platform — workflows, campaigns, email, SMS, unlimited push notifications, subscribers, and metrics — with no time limit and no credit card required. You only pay when you need higher send limits or the premium features (Templates and Post-Purchase Upsell).
When am I charged for a paid plan?
A paid plan starts billing as soon as you approve the charge in Shopify, and renews every 30 days on your Shopify invoice. Use the Free plan to try things out before you subscribe.
What’s the difference between Free and Basic?
Free gives you 100 sends — enough to test everything. Basic ($99/mo) gives you 500 sends per cycle, up to 2 of each email provider, and unlocks the Templates Feature and Post-Purchase Upsell. Sending pauses when you reach your plan’s limit; there are no per-send charges on any plan.
What are “Sends”?
Each email or SMS delivered to one recipient counts as one send. If you send a campaign to 50 subscribers, that’s 50 sends. Push notifications do not count as sends — they’re unlimited on all plans.
Do push notifications count toward my send limit?
No. Push notifications are unlimited on every plan, including Free, and always free. Only emails and SMS count as sends.
What happens when I reach my send limit?
Email and SMS sending pauses — at 100 sends on Free and 500 on Basic. There are no per-send charges on any plan, so you’re never billed beyond your plan’s monthly price. Push notifications keep working. To carry on, upgrade to Pro or Premium for unlimited sends, or wait for your counter to reset (the start of the next calendar month on Free, your next billing date on a paid plan).
Do I pay extra to connect my AI assistant?
No. Connect AI is included on every plan, with no limit on how many AI clients you connect. xUpsell doesn’t meter or mark up AI usage — you use your own AI client (Claude, ChatGPT, or another MCP-compatible client) and pay that provider directly.
Can I switch plans at any time?
Yes. Go to Settings → Plans & billing and choose a plan. Upgrades take effect immediately; a move to a lower paid plan starts at your next billing date; switching to Free happens right away.
Do I lose my data if I switch to a lower plan?
No. All your workflows, campaigns, subscribers, and analytics data are preserved. Premium features (Templates, Post-Purchase Upsell) become unavailable on the Free plan, but your data remains.
What is Post-Purchase Upsell?
It’s a feature that shows upsell offers to customers right after they complete checkout — before they leave the thank-you page. It’s available on Basic ($99/mo), Pro ($199/mo), and Premium ($299/mo) plans.
What is the Templates Feature?
It’s access to the xUpsell template library — pre-built workflows you can use as starting points instead of building from scratch. Available on Basic ($99/mo), Pro ($199/mo), and Premium ($299/mo) plans. Saving your own workflows as templates is separate and works on every plan, including Free.
What additional costs are there beyond my plan?
Your xUpsell plan is billed through Shopify. Beyond that, you pay Twilio directly for SMS at their per-message rates, your email provider if it has its own charges (a SendGrid paid plan, for example), and your own AI provider if you use Connect AI. xUpsell itself never charges per send — sending simply pauses when you reach your plan’s limit.
My billing cycle rolled over but my usage card still shows the old number. What do I do?
Each billing period gets its own send counter, so the card starts reading 0 again once the new period is in use rather than being wiped in place. The card refreshes every 30 seconds — if it still looks stale after a page reload, give it up to a day (xUpsell re-checks your subscription with Shopify daily) and then use the in-app Help widget (the round ? button in the bottom-right corner) to reach our team.
